Blitzcast 029 : limbic sis

limbic sis, aka Karo, from Berlin is a very busy woman indeed: whether she’s playing DJ sets solo or as one half of the duo bae2bae, working on releases and events with her very own, newly founded PLOT RECORDS or as a co-founder of FLINTA*-focused Layers collective, it’s clear that music holds a central place in her life.

We got to know her at Waking Life Festival and she’s well aware of the power of community and its importance for music — which makes her a great fit for the upcoming Cruise, where she’ll be playing on Saturday, 13/09, alongside Virginia on the PLUS floor, and AB8LUTE, Tobi Neumann, and the Zenker Brothers on the BLITZ floor. Expect an animated blend of deep & pumpy Deep House, Acid, and beyond — the inspired selector has plenty of ideas and influences to draw from.

Our upcoming Blitzcast: 029 offers a glimpse into her musical selection and curation. We took the time to ask her about her musical journey and inspirations, her Blitzcast, PLOT RECORDS and more to give you a sense of the multifaceted personality ahead of our Cruise celebrations.

And don’t forget to follow her and her projects on social media & the web:

Looking back: how did you first discover dance music? Which moments defined your musical journey?

I first discovered electronic dance music when I was about 13 or 14, and it was all about EDM. Back in school, it was just my friend Otschi and me listening to it – for everyone else it felt way too alternative. Whenever someone asked who should put on music, the response was always:
> But not Karo and Otschi!! <

My actual musical journey began much earlier, when I started playing the piano at the age of four. Things really took off after moving to Berlin – no surprise there, haha. Over the last eight years, though, it’s taken a full 180 and continues to evolve every single day.

What inspired your Blitzcast recording?

I wanted to create a mix people could enjoy before the Cruise party – or really before any occasion where you want to get into the mood.
I’m especially inspired by the NYC and Chicago house scenes, with their triplet rhythms that instantly make you want to swing and move. In recent months, I’ve been lucky enough to play gigs in some very sunny places, and that energy has shaped this Blitzcast – it’s light, joyful, and playful, with some cheeky percussive elements woven in.

Let’s talk about names: limbic sis, PLOT RECORDS — what do they stand for and represent [emotionally and symbolically]?
> Limbic sis < is a wordplay on the limbic system – the part of the brain that regulates emotion, motivation, and behavior combined with > sis < as in sister. It reflects my background in medicine while merging into my creative world.
PLOT, on the other hand, is quite literal: it represents storytelling, a sequence where one event leads to another. Though, of course, you never know when a plot twist will come…

PLOT is committed to challenging industry norms: from supporting marginalized and underrepresented queer, FLINTA & BIPOC communities, to donating all profits from its first release, to even hosting a dinner as its first event. What kinds of interventions and concepts are next?

PLOT grew directly out of my own experiences in the industry, which makes it very close to my heart. Through releases, collaborations, and community-driven initiatives, the idea is to foster a network of people who support, uplift, and inspire each other. With growing inequalities both within and outside the industry, it feels more important than ever to stand with and amplify the people who truly build the scene.
The first release was a 13-track compilation exclusively featuring queer, FLINTA*, and BIPOC* artists. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, so a second compilation following the same concept will be released in October.

You’re playing the upcoming Cruise on SAT 13/09. What can we expect from your set on the PLUS floor alongside Virginia? Also share your thoughts on playing beside Virginia, too.

I’m so excited to finally play Cruise! I’ve heard so many great things, and it’s definitely one of my highlights this year. Playing after Virginia sets the bar high and makes me a little nervous, haha. She’s such an icon, and I’ve even booked her for my own party, so it’s a real honor to take over from her.
Musically, you can expect punchy old-school basslines blending into a dubby, warm sound that carries the crowd straight into a cozy Sunday.
