Welcome to the practical seminar on contemporary American music history, with a thematic focus on Chicago-Techno. Our guest speakers at Blitz tonight: the two veterans DJ Rush and DJ Skull, both of them being active since the 80s. The two musicians will tell the story of the unjustly overlooked techno from the US city in the shadow of the town’s house sound from different perspectives. DJ Rush quickly gained a reputation for tight and snappy (hard-)techno grooves, but distinguished himself with a characteristic swing and subtle tribal-influenced beats – aptly expressed through one of his track titles > Ability To Swing <. The impact of the city’s prominent house community, on the other hand, can be better traced in DJ Skull’s work, as Ron Maney continues to move skilfully at the interface of the two styles. His diverse connections to the European scene are also well documented and shouldn’t be missed out in the context of the seminar reader. Our two local resident DJs and lecturers, Glaskin, will adequately prepare all course participants for our two international artists with breakbeat-oriented techno tools.

Willkommen zum Praxisseminar neuere amerikanische Musikgeschichte mit thematischen Schwerpunkt Technosounds aus Chicago. Als Gastdozenten im Blitz: die Szeneveteranen DJ Rush und DJ Skull, die beide bereits seit den 80ern aktiv sind. Unsere beiden Gäste erzählen die Geschichte des im Schatten des Chiago-Housesounds zu Unrecht gern übersehen Techno aus der US-Metropole aus verschiedenen Perspektive. DJ Rush gilt als Spezialist für stramme und flotte (Hard-)Techno-Grooves, zeichnet sich dabei aber durch einen charakteristischen Swing und subtil tribal-angehauchte Beats aus – treffend im Namen seines Titels > Ability To Swing < ausgedrückt.
Der Einfluss der einflussreichen House-Szene der Stadt lässt sich dagegen besser in DJ Skulls Wirken nachweisen, bewegt sich Ron Maney auch weiterhin gern und gekonnt an der Schnittstelle der beiden Stile. Aber auch seine vielfältigen Verbindungen in die europäische Szene sind gründlich erforscht und sind im Rahmen der Seminarlektüre nicht zu vernachlässigen.
Unsere beiden hiesigen Resident-DJs und Dozenten Glaskin werden alle Kursteilnehmer adäquat mit Breakbeat orientierten Techno-Sounds auf unsere beiden internationale Gäste vorbereiten.
