Widescreen grooves and from South African shooting star DESIREE, longtime Blitz companion Sascha Sibler, and local Nino Schmidbauer form the soundtrack to July’s Deep- and Afro-House-powered estival club night.
From a township in Johannesburg to global stages—with adolescent detours via Nick Cave, Radiohead and Atoms For Peace—DESIREE channels a wealth of influences into her soft-hued and buoyant sound. Rooted in the rich rhythms of South Africa’s capital and centred on Afro-inflected House, she distils sounds from Deep House to Gqom, Amapiano and Techno into a tender, evocative cocktail of ambling grooves and layered emotion—tried and tested at clubs and festivals from DC-10 to Fabric and beyond. Committed to building new social and musical outlets in her home country, her event series MMINO carves out space for broader forms of DJing in Johannesburg, driven by her cosmopolitan approach to music.
Longtime comrade and Innervisions affiliate Sascha Sibler operates at the intersections of House, Techno and Tech House, with a fluid approach that aware of the captivating contrasts the between musical understatement and sweeping gestures. Rounding out the night is the Münchner Nino Schmidbauer. The architect and DJ crafts sets built on gleaming, emotive (Deep) House, with a sense of the current momentum.
