> The slow burn has absolutely been my choice, < said Josey Rebelle a couple of years ago, and it still rings true today. Shying away from public stunts and social media, the London-born and -bred DJ has based her career on music and DJing alone. No labels, no productions, barely any publicity—just a consistent, thematically wide-ranging string of sets and selections, well documented in her long-running Rinse FM show, which showcases a broad and Black transatlantic blend of Jungle, House, Soul, Jazz, and – possibly – oil and water, too, just to name a few coordinates of her multifaceted influences.
With her parents relocating from the Caribbean to London-Tottenham as part of the Windrush generation, she grew up with an eclectic selection of music and a grounded mindset that continues to influence her today. > With my upbringing and the generation I grew up in, the worst thing you can do is be a show-off, < she says, preferring minimal lighting and letting the music do the talking.
> There’s no formula. You need passion, above all. And again—it’s about why you do it, < says household name Len Faki, the Figure imprint founder and a Berghain resident since its early days, who joins Josey Rebelle alongside VSSL, playing his Blitz debut. Two German selectors who play rock-solid Techno and share a passion-based ethos. > Enjoy it. That’s the highest priority for all of us: to love what we do. We’re not focused on making money. It’s about contributing something to the culture—for the music lovers out there, < says the Rote Sonne affiliate and roots.audio founder VSSL and that’s what makes him a great fit for our upcoming Klubnacht.
