> There’s darkness, but it’s also soothing and sexy. I want to create a vulnerable space where you can reflect on what’s going on internally, but then have swells of climax to lose yourself in. < Aurora Halal once described her sound this way. Her press release speaks of > a vision of dance music that is raw, complex and spiritually charged < and it takes only moments within her mixes or productions to hear to prove her claims justice.
Her detailed, immersive strain of techno reflects her many artistic dimensions: DJ, producer and live performer, founder of the Sustain-Release festival, and head of the Mutual Dreaming imprint and party series. Perhaps it’s also her work as a visual artist and videographer that lends her sound its cinematic and evocative depth.
Canada’s Priori is another kind of sonic alchemist, a selector with near-synaesthetic instincts and a deep affinity for film and video game aesthetics. His productions share Halal’s ocular edge (both have appeared on Paul St. Hilaire’s recent album too), and drift between techno, dub, bass, IDM and ambient, with a strong narrative pull well displayed on album format. Alongside releases on his own NAFF Recordings, his latest work landed on Kynant Records, and he recently unveiled the debut album of his Jump Source project, exploring the junction of dance and pop.
And our resident Victor? Our friend with the versatile record bag is a fitting match for our eclectic guests from North America and is living proof that a > jack of all trades < doesn’t have to mean master of none.
