Hard Wax opened in Kreuzberg in 1989, founded by Mark Ernestus of Basic Channel for records arriving from Detroit and Chicago. In the decades since, the shop has shaped the taste of a generation of DJs and producers, operating as the junction of the Berlin-Detroit axis. 

Such as: Peter Kuschnereit, DJ Pete, also known as Substance, has been part of Hard Wax since 1991, making him its longest-serving staff member. As a producer, he recorded under the Scion alias alongside René Löwe (Vainqueur), releasing on Basic Channel’s sub-label Chain Reaction, with remixes for Juan Atkins, Robert Hood, and Rhythm & Sound. Anthony Child, also known as Surgeon, meanwhile moved from Northamptonshire to Birmingham in 1989, where he soon became one of UK Techno’s spearheads, with influential releases on Downwards and Tresor to follow soon. On Saturday the 9th of May, Pete and Surgeon play back-to-back: a pairing with a proven chemistry, with a history that dates back to the 90s at Tresor.

Reka Zalan has been one of the newer members of the Hard Wax staff since 2019, after several years of working for the Berlin Music Commission. Her sets are shaped by a self-described „hypnotic depth and percussive drive”, a sound she has honed among a wide range of gigs that also includes Tresor, where DJ Pete & Surgeon regularly went back to back. Last but not least: Blitz Core member Reduks (co-)runs his own imprint roots.audio alongside our resident Kareem El Morr & VSSL and will complete the night with more essential techno.
