Blitz Club has never limited itself to dance music. The upcoming Clubkonzert shows what happens when seemingly opposite worlds collide: classical music in a club.
A string trio of the Münchener Kammerorchester opens with Alfred Schnittke’s Trio for Violin, Viola and Cello, written for Alban Berg’s centenary. The piece captures Schnittke’s signature polystylism, where past and present styles sit side by side, Romantic lyricism rubbing against modern dissonance, all launched from the simple motif of Happy Birthday. It’s followed by the aria from Bach’s Goldberg Variations, originally written for harpsichord and fusing German, Italian and French keyboard traditions.
Next, an oboe quintet of the Munich Philharmonic presents two rarely performed 20th-century pieces. Arnold Bax’s Oboe quintet reflects the British composer’s Romantic leanings and fascination with Irish folk music, pioneering in its time. The Hungarian composer Antal Dórati, better known as a conductor than a composer, reveals another face of modernity in his Notturno e Capriccio. The interplay of nocturnal and playful caprice makes for an apt prelude to the club night that follows.
