Lobster Theremin 5 Years – 09/02/18

Jimmy Asquith founded the well-renowned label Lobster Theremin in 2013. Since then the label boss has established three imprints including; Mörk, Distant Hawaii and Tidy Bedroom, as well as a respected distribution service used widely within the electronic music scene, and a physical record shop based in Hackney, East London. Route 8 has only recently gained prominence through the Lobster Theremin and Nous labels, but his hardware production experiments date back almost 10 years. Inspired by the raw-edged US house and techno sound, he has also expanded his work into off-kilter electro and ambient, still inflicted with his melancholia-tinged melodies and racheting drum patterns. We are happy to celebrate 5 YEARS LOBSTER THEREMIN this friday, 09/02/18!

The Black Madonna – 13/02/18

In December of 2012, North America’s oldest independent venue, Smart Bar announced the The Black Madonna as a new resident, along with Derrick Carter and Frankie Knuckles. Within a year, she became the club’s first ever Creative Director in its three decade history, bringing a decidedly anti-establishment philosophy to her curatorial style. Her retooled residency program reflects a distinct set of values, adding Honey Soundsystem, DVS1, Regis, Honey Dijon and transgressive events such as Men’s Room to an already diverse offering. We’re happy to welcome the riot girl The Black Madonna for our Kehraus Party alongside HAAi and Blitz Resident DJs on tuesday, 13/02/18. Don’t forget your costume!

Listen to her first BBC Radio 1 show here.

Levon Vincent – 02/02/18

When it comes to house music there’s been something of a renaissance in New York City these past few years, and one of its main advocates is Levon Vincent. As a club- goer, he cut his teeth during the pre-Giuliani New York heyday, where a vibrant scene was helping to push the elegant sound that would become known as NY house forward – and Levon witnessed it all first-hand. We are looking forward to have owner of Novel Sound, Levon Vincent for the very first time at BLITZ Music Club this friday alongside L.B. Dub Corp and the Zenker Brothers!

XLR8R Mix – Muallem

I think I play music in the best way I can when absorbing the energy that surrounds me. Obviously, the energy in a club at 5 am is different to the one when enjoying tracks while spacing out on my sofa in wintertime. This mix is the result of the latter energy. Sometimes I also do dance at home.”

Have a listen to Davids studio mix “inspired by spacing out on his sofa in wintertime” in support of this years Her Damit Festival!

Josh Wink – 26/01/18

James Baldwin once wrote, “Be careful what you set your heart upon, for it will surely be yours.” Embracing a diligent work ethic, a spiritual mindset & a self-taught mastery of dancefloor devastation using little more than a pair of turntables, Josh Wink has worked hard since 1990 to become one of the world’s most in demand purveyors of experimental, electronic, danceable music. Wink has been very busy in the studio finishing up a new studio album which should see release the summer of 2018. This is not all he has been up to, he recently completed a remix of Freaks `Mr Computer Man´which will be coming in February on Edible Records and he also finished a remix of Steve Bug and Clé, which will be coming out on Rejected records. Outside of the album, be on the lookout for original Josh Wink music, in the first half of 2018.

Boys Noize – 27/01/18

He´s the Techno punk, the wanderer between the worlds: Berlin DJ and producer Alex Ridha, better known as BOYS NOIZE, made his DJ debut at the age of 15, taking a teenager´s love of house and techno to a global scale. As an artist and producer, BOYS NOIZE has created a sound that is peerless, uncompromising, and enduring – respected in the scene, banging from underground to mainstream, his work flies in the face of convention at every turn. Ridha is also running his own label, Boysnoize Records (BNR), which he founded in 2005. Originally started to retain his full artistic freedom and in order to release his own music under BOYS NOIZE, BNR became a home for multidirectional quality electronic music, having formed a league of its own whilst escaping any ill-fitting genre pigeonholes. The Berlin-based “non-conformist DIY anarchist collective” (Dazed & Confused) have celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2015 and count more than 150 releases.

Tama Sumo – 19/01/18

Heart, emotion and passion instead of pure functionality – these are Tama Sumo’s DJ characteristics in a nutshell. She started out in 1993 at Drama bar in Berlin / Kreuzberg, one of the first bars to ever feature its own DJ at the weekend and an important hang out for the scene before going to the clubs.

Since 2001 Tama Sumo also played regularly at the Dance With The Aliens party at the old OstGut, Berghain’s predecessor club, which eventually opened the door to a residency at the new Panorama Bar & Berghain shortly after the club opened. She developed a varied style ranging from House, Disco, Techno, a smidgen of Detroit Electro and Pop. “Music for me is something very subjective and I always attempt to approach it with my intuition & heart,” Tama Sumo comments.

Not satisfied with remaining static as a DJ, Tama Sumo’s sets have developed to cover House, Techno, Jazz, Disco, Broken Beat, Soul, Funk, Afro Beat.

The art of DJing: Roman Flügel

“One night in April back in 2011, Roman Flügel was behind the decks at Horst Krzbrg, a now-defunct Berlin club. Standing over six feet tall, he was relaxed, moving from side to side while adjusting his headphones with one hand. Headlining a party for Live At Robert Johnson, the label arm of his home club, he spun some of the deepest and most hypnotic music you’re likely to hear during a night out, moving through subtle deep house and delicate techno with smooth transitions and a steady pace.” Read the whole interview with Roman Flügel on Resident Advisor.

Daniel Miller – 20/01/18

Daniel Miller is the founder of Mute, launched in 1978 with his own 7” single – ‘Warm Leatherette’ under the name The Normal.Since then, Mute has grown from Miller’s one-man operation into a global group of companies and today, as ever, Miller remains heavily focussed on Mute’s creative output. Although he DJed many years ago, Daniel Miller’s recent DJing was inspired by an invitation from Karl O’Connor aka Regis who invited him to perform at a Sandwell District event at Berlin’s Berghain. There he caught the bug to play again and since has been playing regular techno  sets worldwide including Sonar, ENTER at Space in Ibiza, ADE in Amsterdam, IMS at Ibiza, Electron festival, LEAF festival in London and many more.

FIT Siegel – 19/01/18

FIT Siegel, otherwise known simply as FIT, has quietly risen to become a pillar of the Detroit underground. Siegel studied production under the tutelage of “Mad” Mike Banks at Submerge (aka the Underground Resistance HQ). His debut record “Tonite,” was released on Omar S’ FXHE label in 2012. FIT has worked closely with Alex O. Smith, remixing his anthemic track S.E.X. and issuing “Enter The Fog”, a collaboration with Gunnar Wendel aka Kassem Mosse, also on FXHE. 2015 saw the release of the highly regarded “Carmine EP”, which caught on instantly with producers, DJs and critics alike. Most notably, FIT has internalized the fierce DIY ethos of both UR and FXHE through his own label, FIT SOUND, and his crucial record distribution company FIT Distribution.

As a DJ, FIT prefers a genre-free approach rather than cordoning off a specific sound. He pulls freely from disco and post punk while also incorporating the most alien forms of techno and house music breeding in Detroit today.

FIT has balanced the roles of running a label and distribution company alongside the work of DJ-ing and producing for some time now. The future sees him focusing on these creative pursuits more than ever.
